RA!SE #5 - The Mahsa Amini Protests

On September 12, 2022, a 22-year-old woman named Mahsa Jina Amini left her home to visit her brother in Tehran, the capital city of Iran. By September 16, she had fallen into a coma and was eventually pronounced dead. By September 17, the first protest erupted during Mahsa Amini’s funeral.

Since then, over 500 peaceful protesters have been killed, 72 of which were children.

Inside Iranian jail they face torture and other ill-treatment such solitary confinement, deliberate denial of medical care, overcrowding, poor sanitation, inadequate food and water, insufficient beds, poor ventilation and insect infestation.

RA!SE #4 - Human Traffic

ABUSE, COERCION, DECEPTION, EXPLOITATION, VIOLENCE…HUMAN TRAFFIC

Victims of Human Trafficking can be forced into labour, begging, crime, sexual exploitation, domestic servitude, or even organ removal. Girls groomed and sold into sex slavery, men tricked into accepting risky job offers and becoming trapped in forced labour in unfamiliar territory, children recruited to work in private homes, cut off from their families and abused behind closed doors.

Many survivors have been trafficked by those known to them who hold a position of trust, such as romantic partners, including spouses, and family members, including parents.

RA!SE #3 - Fast Fashion, No Thanks!

FAST FASHION HAS A HUGE IMPACT ON PEOPLE AND THE PLANET

The most successful fast fashion brands use influencers and other ploys to push trend driven items at ridiculously low prices, all while producing new clothing collections as often as every two weeks. And this all comes at a huge cost to the lives of the workers who make the clothes and the environment.

Slave labour in sweatshops has been an inconvenient truth that shoppers have ducked for years. But the full cost of our obsession with new clothes is even greater than unregulated factories and we’re finding out more about it all the time.

RA!SE #2 - The State Of Play

Between 2010 – 2020 more than 6,500 workers have died in Qatar since it won the right to host the World Cup.

To build seven new stadiums, a new airport, dozens of hotels and an entirely new city that will host the World Cup Final, the country hired workers from, among other countries, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In the 10 years since earning the controversial bid, an average of 12 workers from those five countries have died per week.

RA!SE #1 - Stand With Hong Kong

After 150 years of British rule, Hong Kong was handed over to China in 1997 under an international treaty between Britain and China. The treaty stated that Britain would give away Hong Kong under the condition that Hong Kong’s way of life would remain unchanged for 50 years.

Since the handover, China has repeatedly breached the Joint Declaration. Hong Kongers’ fundamental freedoms are under attack. Their media outlets have been co-opted, democratically-elected legislators disqualified, and peaceful activists jailed. Many of which have now shared harrowing statements of torture and sexual assault by the police during detention. These numbers are rising. Millions have marched peacefully against the bill only to be met with excessive force from the police. Dissidents ‘disappeared’ in Hong Kong without a record of crossing the Hong Kong border but then reappeared in China for show trials.

The Hong Kong institutions are crumbling, their rights threatened, their freedom curtailed. And they are terrified.
